INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES
Embark on a cultural experience by learning French, Japanese or Punjabi. Students with prior courses or who can demonstrate proficiency in a particular language may qualify for retroactive credits or acceleration to a higher level course.
French 10-9Y, 20-9Y and 30-9Y offer French programming for students who have successfully completed French 9-9Y in junior high school. Building on prior knowledge, students will have an opportunity to improve their vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students with previous French Immersion experience may be placed in a higher level class. Grade 9 FSL is required for French 10-9Y Grade 9 French Immersion is required for French 31a.
Japanese 10-3Y, 20-3Y and 30-3Y provide students with the language, grammar and vocabulary skills needed to read, write and speak Japanese in an authentic context. With field trips and interactions with native Japanese speakers, students are exposed to real-world experiences that support their learning.
Punjabi 10-3Y, 20-3Y and 30-3Y provide students with the language, grammar and vocabulary skills needed to read, write and speak Punjabi. For those students who already have some knowledge of Punjabi or a family connection to the culture, there is the opportunity to maintain contact with the language, culture and heritage. For some, learning Punjabi is an opportunity to renew and further develop their first language skills. Students will learn to read, write and speak Punjabi at an introductory level and also learn about Punjabi culture.
